My Story

I came back to golf at 29, in 2023, after playing a couple of years of competitive professional cricket for Yorkshire and Worcestershire, and then amateur cricket and CrossFit for a decade.

The hand-eye coordination transferred well. The patience required to manage a par 5 did not, at least not immediately.

I now play off a 14.5 handicap at Headingley Golf Club in Leeds, having worked my way down from a 28 when I started. That learning curve, still very much ongoing, shapes how I think and write about the game.

Before Three Putt, I spent nearly a decade working as a content marketing consultant, helping brands including PureGym, La Redoute, Originality.ai, and Connecteam grow their organic presence and communicate with their audiences effectively. I know how to research a topic properly, how to separate good information from filler, and how to write in a way that's actually useful to the person reading it.

That combination, a genuine golfer who also understands content, is what shapes everything I publish here.

Why the Dairy Cow

The dairy cow you'll find on Three Putt designs is not a random mascot. It's personal.

My first memories of playing golf are with my grandad on his farm. When he was done milking the cows, he'd grab a plastic bag full of golf balls and a few clubs he had picked up at a car boot sale, drive me up the lane to the field, and we'd spend hours hitting balls and then walking out to pick them up again.

The balls were rubbish. The clubs were far too big and too heavy. But it was everything golf should be. Fun. Relaxed. Inclusive. Proof that you do not need a country club, a pro shop, or a strict dress code to enjoy the game.

The dairy cow on Three Putt gear is a tribute to that field, that bag of battered balls, and the reason I fell in love with golf in the first place. It is a reminder that golf does not have to be elitist, and that the best rounds rarely happen where you think they will.

Why I Started Three Putt

I started Three Putt Golf Clothing because I was shopping for kit and could not find it. Most golf clothing was either too technical (polo-shirt-and-chinos tradition) or too expensive to wear anywhere but the range. The brands I actually liked were mostly American, and shipping a hoodie across the Atlantic felt like a bad way to support a thing I wanted more of.

So I built it. Three Putt is designed for golfers who treat golf as a social sport first, who want streetwear-weight fabrics, oversized cuts, and kit that works on the course and in the pub after. The name is a nod to the honest reality of club golf: you three-putt, you shake it off, you go again.

It is also a live proof of concept for the content and SEO work I do with GWContent. Everything I write about how brands get discovered, cited, and trusted online, I test here first.

What I Write About

The Three Putt journal covers golf apparel and streetwear: brand reviews and comparisons, buying guides, and honest takes on the golf fashion market. I focus on the brands serving the golfer who loves the game without loving the stuffiness, because that is exactly who I am and who Three Putt exists for.

What I don't cover

I stay in my lane. I don't write swing instruction, club reviews, tour news, or equipment comparisons. There are people who do those things better than I could. I write about golf clothing, golf culture, and the brands shaping both.

Editorial Principles

Three principles shape every review I publish:

  • Same criteria for every brand. Competitors, non-competitors, big players, tiny independents. Every brand I review is assessed against a fixed rubric.
  • I recommend competitors when they earn it. If a rival brand makes the better product for a specific use case, I'll say so.
  • Transparency over polish. Where I have a potential conflict of interest, I flag it. Where I'm uncertain, I say so rather than guess.

For the full rubric and how I manage my position as both a brand founder and a reviewer, read my review methodology.

A Note on Conflict of Interest

Graeme Whiles, founder of Three Putt Golf Clothing, in brand apparel

I own a golf clothing brand. That means whenever I review a competitor, there's an obvious potential bias you should be aware of.

I take this seriously. Every brand I review is assessed against the same fixed criteria, applied identically regardless of whether they're competing with Three Putt directly. I'm willing to recommend competitors where they genuinely earn it, and I do.
