Honest Johnnie-O Golf Clothing Review 2026 | Three Putt Golf

We test golf apparel the way we play. Hard, social, and honest.

Three folded Johnnie-O polos: two white with small pink and red prints, one striped in blue, pink and yellow

Four buttons, a chest pocket and a little surfer on the logo: the American prep brand that grew one cotton polo into a full golf wardrobe.

How We Review Golf Clothing Brands

Every review on the Three Putt journal is written by Graeme Whiles, the founder of Three Putt Golf Clothing. As a competing brand, we have an obvious conflict of interest. We take this seriously and address it directly in our review methodology, which explains how we assess brands consistently regardless of whether they compete with us.

Verdict: 7.6/10

Johnnie-O is the American prep brand John O'Donnell started in 2005 with a four-button cotton polo. We liked how far it has come since: cotton and performance polos, the best-selling Sully quarter-zip, golf trousers in three leg lengths, waterproof rain trousers and sizes from boys' to big and tall.

It has tour credibility too. J.T. Poston won the 2026 Memorial Tournament five months after signing with the brand, and the Original polo averages 4.7/5 across 555 reviews on Johnnie-O's own site.

Where it falls short for UK golfers: prices are in US dollars only, every store is in America, and we couldn't find a UK golf retailer that stocks it. Johnnie-O also doesn't accept returns on international orders, except where the law requires, so a wrong size is usually yours to keep.

This brand is best for golfers who want a relaxed American polo that works on the first tee and at dinner, and who know their size before they order.

Johnnie-O not the right brand for you? Check out our comprehensive list of the best Johnnie-O alternatives.

Key Features

  • Signature tech/fabric: The Original 4-Button Polo in 95% cotton and 5% spandex, plus Jersey, Featherweight and Mesh performance polos with UPF 50 sun protection
  • Design language: What the brand calls West Coast Prep: classic American shapes, stripes and playful prints, with a small surfer logo on the Original polo's pocket
  • Fit profile: One standard fit across all menswear; many tops run S–XXXL, big and tall goes to 4XB and 4XLT, and golf trousers come in three leg lengths
  • Range depth: Polos, tees, quarter-zips, hoodies, golf trousers and shorts, shackets, rain gear, caps, belts and shoes, plus women's and boys' ranges

Pros

  • The Original polo is a modern classic, rated 4.7/5 across 555 reviews on Johnnie-O's site
  • Sizes from boys' to big and tall (up to 4XB and 4XLT), plus women's XS–XL
  • Genuine golf kit beyond the polo: Cross Country trousers, Mulligan shorts and seam-sealed Tsunami rain trousers
  • Duties and taxes are usually paid and guaranteed at checkout, so most UK parcels arrive with nothing more to pay

Cons

  • No returns on international orders, except where the law requires
  • Prices in US dollars only, with international shipping on top
  • No UK stores or UK golf stockists that we could find
  • Licensed college and pro-sport pieces don't ship to the UK at all

Johnnie-O Pricing

Johnnie-O prices like the premium American lifestyle brand it has become: polos at $89–$118, quarter-zips at $138–$148 and golf trousers at $148. That's below Holderness & Bourne, whose shirts start at $115. UK visitors see US dollars, so the pound figures below are conversions at about $1.30 to £1, before shipping and import VAT.

Category Entry Typical Premium
Polos £68 £75–£85 £91+
Tees £50 £52 £68
Midlayers £91 £98–£114 £137
Trousers/Shorts £83 £114 £175
Outerwear £129 £152–£191 £268
Caps £27 £29 £34

US prices on johnnie-o.com, October 2026: Original 4-Button Polo $89 (striped $98), performance polos $105–$118, Merino Blend Long Sleeve Polo $298, tees $65–$88, hoodies $118–$128, Sully quarter-zip $138, Plaited crewneck sweater $178, Mulligan shorts $108, Cross Country Flex trousers $148, Monterey trouser $228, rain jackets $168–$348, Tsunami rain trousers $198 and caps $35–$44.

Comparison:

  • Johnnie-O vs Three Putt: Different jobs. Johnnie-O dresses the round itself, with collared polos, golf trousers and rain gear priced in dollars. Three Putt is a UK brand with golf tees from £24.99, sweatshirts from £37.99, heavyweight hoodies from £45.99 and free UK delivery, made for the hours either side of it.
  • Johnnie-O vs Criquet: The closest in spirit: two American brands built on a cotton shirt that looks right in the bar. Criquet shows UK visitors pounds (£96 for a Players Shirt) and takes returns from Britain within 60 days if you pay the postage. Johnnie-O's polo has the lower price tag, but it can't go back.
  • Johnnie-O vs Holderness & Bourne: H&B makes the sharper, more tailored shirt, with a structured collar, from $115 against Johnnie-O's $89. Johnnie-O is softer and more relaxed, goes much further on sizes, and has the women's range H&B lacks.
  • Johnnie-O vs Birddogs: Two takes on relaxed American golf. Birddogs sells $99 polos with joke names and is best known for its liner shorts; Johnnie-O is the more polished wardrobe, with knitwear, rain gear and women's and boys' ranges.

Promos/Outlet Notes:

Johnnie-O runs end-of-season sales, and anything marked Final Sale can't be returned, wherever you live. Military, first responders, healthcare workers, government employees and teachers verified through GovX, a US service, get a 15% discount. US orders over $150 ship free, and monogramming costs $10.

Verdict: 6.8/10

Fair money for premium American golfwear if you live in the US. From the UK, dollar pricing, shipping, import VAT and a no-returns policy mean every order costs more and risks more.

Johnnie-O Fit & Sizing (Usability)

Johnnie-O keeps fit simple. Its size guide says it uses one standard fit across all menswear rather than slim or athletic labels, so you can order the same size across styles. The deliberate exception is the Original polo, cut 2 inches shorter than the other polos so it looks right untucked.

Notes:

  • Polos: Most Original, Jersey and Featherweight polos run S–XXXL; the Mesh polo and some prints stop at XXL. If you tuck in for medal rounds, choose a full-length performance polo.
  • Midlayers: The Sully runs S–XXXL, while the Sof Tech quarter-zip and Pebble hoodie stop at XXL.
  • Trousers/Shorts: The Cross Country Flex comes in 30–40 inch waists, including 33 and 35, with a 30, 32 or 34 inch leg. The Mulligan shorts have a 9-inch inseam.
  • Outerwear: Rain jackets and the Tsunami trousers stop at XXL.
  • Size Charts: Separate guides for men's, boys', big and tall and women's sizes. Men's tops cover a 36–54 inch chest.

Accessibility/Range:

  • Big and tall tops in 2XB–4XB and LT–4XLT, including the Sully ($158) and the Talon hoodie.
  • Women's polos, layers and trousers in XS–XL.
  • Boys' versions of best-sellers such as the Original polo, the Sully and the Cross Country trousers.

Verdict: 8.2/10

One consistent fit and a size run few golf brands can match. The catch for UK buyers is that a wrong size usually can't go back.

Johnnie-O Core Product Categories

Polos

The polo built the brand and still leads it. The Original 4-Button Polo ($89, or $98 in stripes) keeps the 2005 shirt's four-button placket and chest pocket, in cotton with a little stretch. The performance polos add wicking and UPF 50: Jersey at $105, Featherweight at $110–$115 in a fabric 30% lighter than the standard jersey, and Mesh at $118. Golf Monthly picked the Beach Break Performance Polo for its Best Golf Polo Shirts 2026 guide.

Verdict: 8.5/10

Midlayers (quarter-zips/hoodies)

The strongest category. The Sully 1/4 Zip ($138) is the brand's long-running best-seller: a soft heathered double knit with a leather zip puller, smart enough for dinner. The Sof Tech and Bixler quarter-zips ($148) are lighter performance layers for the course, and the Talon and Pebble hoodies ($118–$128) cover cooler practice days.

Verdict: 8.5/10

Golfer in a navy Johnnie-O quarter-zip with the surfer logo and light grey trousers, holding an iron

Trousers/Shorts

Better than you'd expect from a polo brand. The Cross Country Flex Performance Pant ($148) is a stretch knit with magnetic back pockets, a gusseted crotch and a keeper waistband to hold a tucked shirt in place. The Mulligan shorts ($108) share those details in a woven four-way stretch, and the garment-dyed Monterey trouser ($228) is the dressier choice.

Verdict: 8.0/10

Outerwear & Rain Gear

Read the labels here. The Tsunami trousers ($198) are seam-sealed and waterproof, with waterproof zips at the cuffs, and Johnnie-O pitches them at golf trips to Ireland and Scotland. The hooded Littlestone jacket ($348) is fully waterproof, in recycled nylon. The Hydro-Pel rain coat ($248) is only water-resistant, though, and the Stealth Stowable ($168) is a short-sleeved packable shell. For a British winter, compare them with the best waterproof golf clothing.

Verdict: 7.4/10

Tees, Caps & Accessories

The tees are casual rather than technical: the sand-washed modal-blend The Tee ($68) and the cotton and modal Brennan long-sleeve ($65), plus the Course performance tee ($88) with UPF 50. Caps run $35–$44, belts and shoes fill out the range, and the licensed college and pro-sport Game Day pieces are really for American fans.

Verdict: 7.6/10

Johnnie-O Materials & Tech (Construction, Sustainability)

Johnnie-O lists the fabric blend on its product pages and backs its performance lines with wicking, stretch and UPF 50. It says it builds each piece to last long enough to be handed down. Where the clothes are made gets far less detail.

Backend (manufacturing & standards):

  • Product pages give the country of origin only as "Imported".
  • A Supplier Code of Conduct, in place since 2018, bans child and forced labour, backed by supplier questionnaires and selected independent audits.
  • Recycled content is rare, with the Littlestone jacket the clearest example, and we found no third-party certifications such as bluesign or OEKO-TEX.
  • Privately owned. Funds managed by Wasatch Global Investors and Ares Management took a minority stake with a $108 million investment in April 2022.

Application (on-garment features):

  • Performance polos: Jersey (93% polyester, 7% spandex), Featherweight (88/12) and a 93/7 Mesh piqué, all with UPF 50.
  • Sully quarter-zip: 64% cotton, 23% modal and 13% polyester double knit.
  • Sof Tech quarter-zip: 90% polyester and 10% spandex at 190gsm.
  • Cross Country trousers: 100% polyester stretch knit with magnetic pocket closures.

Verdict: 7.6/10

Clear fabric labelling and genuinely useful golf details. Thin on sustainability, and silent on where the clothes are made.

Johnnie-O Customer Support

For American customers this is first-class service. UK buyers get the same people on the phone, but none of the safety net, because the generous returns policy stops at the US border.

Channels & Hours

  • Phone (877-787-4703), text, live chat and email (wingman@johnnie-o.com), Monday to Friday 6:30am to 5pm Pacific time, roughly 2:30pm to 1am in the UK, with shorter weekend phone hours.
  • A promised reply within 24 hours.
  • More than 20 Johnnie-O stores, all in the US, take online returns in person.

Policies

  • US: 60 days from purchase for unworn, unwashed items, free at its stores and nearly 8,000 Happy Returns drop-off points. Mail-in refunds lose $7 per return label.
  • International: Johnnie-O "does not accept returns on international orders, except where required by applicable law". EU and EEA customers get a 14-day right of withdrawal; the UK isn't mentioned.
  • Final Sale items, gift cards and monogrammed pieces can't be returned.

Self-Serve

  • International delivery takes 6–14 business days Standard or 1–5 Express, before customs, with the cost shown at checkout.
  • Duties and taxes are usually collected and guaranteed at checkout, though a few orders may be charged on delivery. Under UK rules on goods from abroad, VAT applies and customs duty can be due over £135.
  • Licensed MLB, NHL, college and NFL pieces ship only within North America.

Verdict: 6.0/10

Excellent in America, with a 60-day window and thousands of drop-off points. From the UK, there's no way back for an order that doesn't fit, and support runs on Pacific time.

What Are Johnnie-O's Review Ratings from Review Sites?

(As of October 2026)

  • Trustpilot: 2.7 from just five reviews on an unclaimed profile, all from US buyers, with complaints about stitching, refunds and service. Too small a sample to mean much.
  • On-site: The Original 4-Button Polo averages 4.7/5 across 555 reviews.
  • Editorial: Golf Monthly's Best Golf Polo Shirts 2026 guide includes the Beach Break Performance Polo for its stretch and UPF 50, warning that the print won't suit traditionalists. Golfers Authority found the Performance Jersey Polo soft rather than shiny and fair value at $98.
  • Credibility Signals: PGA Tour players Jake Knapp and J.T. Poston signed multi-year deals in January 2026, and UK golf YouTubers Peter Finch and Danny Maude are among its content creators. 113K Instagram followers.

Synthesis:

Owners and the golf press like the clothes, the polos especially. The few complaints are about service and quality control, and for UK buyers the real issue isn't the product at all. It's the returns policy.

Is Johnnie-O a Good Golf Brand?

Yes. Johnnie-O is a very good American golf brand, with polos for every kind of round, sizes for almost every build, a best-selling quarter-zip, and proper golf trousers and rain trousers to go with them. For UK golfers the trade-offs are practical rather than about quality: dollar prices, international shipping, no UK stockists we could find, and no returns on international orders except where the law requires. Buy it if you're sure of your size. If you want relaxed golf clothing from a UK brand with free UK delivery, Three Putt's golf tees and heavyweight hoodies cover the time before and after the round. For more US labels and how they treat UK buyers, see our guide to American golf brands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Johnnie-O

Who owns Johnnie-O?

Johnnie-O is a privately owned American company, founded in 2005 by John O'Donnell, a Chicago native and former UCLA golfer. In April 2022, funds managed by Wasatch Global Investors and Ares Management invested $108 million for a minority stake. In June 2026, the credit news service Octus reported that the company was exploring a sale.

Does Johnnie-O ship to the UK?

Yes, in US dollars, with the shipping cost set at checkout. Express takes 1–5 business days and Standard 6–14, not counting customs. Johnnie-O normally collects and guarantees duties and taxes at checkout, so the parcel should arrive with nothing to pay. Its licensed college and pro-sport ranges don't ship to Britain.

Can I return Johnnie-O clothing from the UK?

Usually not. Johnnie-O's policy rules out returns on international orders, except where the law requires them. EU and EEA customers get a 14-day right of withdrawal, but the UK isn't mentioned, while US customers get 60 days. Measure yourself against the size guide first, because a UK order that doesn't fit will probably stay in your wardrobe.

How much does a Johnnie-O polo cost?

The Original 4-Button Polo costs $89 (about £68), or $98 in stripes. Performance polos run up to $118 (about £91), and the merino, silk and cashmere long-sleeve polo is $298. UK buyers pay in dollars, add international shipping and pay import VAT, which is usually collected at checkout.

How does Johnnie-O sizing run?

Johnnie-O uses one standard fit across its menswear, so the same size should work in every style. Most polos run S–XXXL, though the Mesh polo and some prints stop at XXL, and the Original is cut 2 inches shorter to wear untucked. Big and tall runs 2XB–4XB and LT–4XLT, and women's XS–XL.

Is Johnnie-O good quality?

The evidence says yes. The Original polo averages 4.7/5 from 555 reviews on Johnnie-O's site, and Golf Monthly included a Johnnie-O performance polo in its Best Golf Polo Shirts 2026 guide. The criticism is thin: Trustpilot shows 2.7 from only five reviews, mostly about stitching and service.

Is Johnnie-O worn on the PGA Tour?

Yes. Jake Knapp and J.T. Poston joined on multi-year deals in January 2026. Knapp, a former UCLA player like the founder, wears its performance polos and Cross Country trousers. Poston gave the brand its biggest moment that June, winning the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village on the second playoff hole for his fourth PGA Tour title.

Does Johnnie-O make waterproof golf clothing?

Some. The Tsunami Packable Waterproof trousers ($198) are seam-sealed, with waterproof zips at the cuffs, and the hooded Littlestone Rain Jacket ($348) is described as fully waterproof. Not every rain piece is: the Hydro-Pel Rain Coat ($248) has a water-resistant shell. All of them stop at XXL.
