Lacoste Golf vs Three Putt: French Sporting Heritage or UK Streetwear

We test golf apparel the way we play. Hard, social, and honest.

A French heritage brand's £100 performance polo against a Leeds streetwear brand's £23.99 graphic tee. Different jobs, different golfers.

How We Review Golf Clothing Brands

Every review on the Three Putt journal is written by Graeme Whiles, the founder of Three Putt Golf Clothing. As a competing brand, we have an obvious conflict of interest. We take this seriously and address it directly in our review methodology, which explains how we assess brands consistently regardless of whether they compete with us.

Verdict and Quick Pick

Lacoste Golf is a full on-course wardrobe: the £100 Ultra Dry Stretch polo, plus golf trousers, shorts, windbreakers, caps and shoes. Three Putt is a Leeds golf streetwear brand selling graphic tees, long-sleeves, sweatshirts and hoodies for £24.99–£54.99. Buy Lacoste for the course and the dress code. Buy Three Putt for everything around the round.

Best for on-course performance and dress codes: Lacoste Golf. Its Ultra Dry polos wick sweat, carry UPF 50 sun protection and satisfy any collared-shirt rule. Add trousers, shorts and windbreakers and you can dress head to toe from one brand.

Best for off-course golf style on a sensible budget: Three Putt. Its 430gsm hoodie costs about half Lacoste's £100 Ultra Dry polo and around a third of its £135 golf hoodie. UK delivery is free, and the six golf graphics suit the range, the pub and the sofa.

Brand Overview

Three Putt Golf

Three Putt is a UK golf streetwear brand based in Leeds. It keeps the range deliberately narrow: six graphic designs, called Contours, Happy Place, Tee Time, Reckless Driving, The Scenic Route and Three on the Green.

Everything sits between £24.99 and £54.99, with free UK delivery. What's missing matters just as much: there are no performance polos, trousers, shorts, outerwear, waterproofs, caps or women's-specific range. It's clothing for golfers rather than a full golf wardrobe.

Lacoste Golf

Lacoste was founded in 1933 by René Lacoste, the French tennis champion nicknamed "the Crocodile". Golf runs through the family. His wife, Simone Thion de la Chaume, won the British Ladies Amateur in 1927, and her father built the Golf de Chantaco course. Their daughter Catherine won the 1967 US Women's Open, the first amateur to take the title.

Today golf sits inside Lacoste Sport. The UK site lists around 120 men's golf products, from Ultra Dry polos to quarter-zips, hoodies, trousers, shorts, windbreakers, New Era caps and golf shoes. There's a women's golf collection too, and Lacoste dresses tour players including Yannick Paul.

Key Features and Fabrics

Three Putt Golf

  • Tees: 100% cotton, 305gsm, relaxed fit, S–2XL, five colourways per design.
  • Long-sleeve tees: 305gsm, 100% cotton, oversized drop-shoulder fit, S–XL.
  • Sweatshirts: 400gsm cotton crewneck, regular fit, S–2XL.
  • Hoodies: 430gsm, 56% cotton / 44% polyester, oversized drop-shoulder fit, S–2XL, four colourways per design.

This is cotton-led streetwear, not technical golf kit. There's no moisture-wicking, stretch tech or weather protection, and Three Putt doesn't claim any. The appeal is weight and feel: a 400gsm sweatshirt or a 430gsm hoodie has real substance, which is the whole point of a heavyweight layer.

Lacoste Golf

  • Ultra Dry Stretch Golf Polo (£100): stretch jersey made from recycled polyester (94% polyester, 6% elastane), with Ultra Dry wicking, UPF 50, a ribbed collar and the crocodile logo. Lacoste says the fabric blocks up to 98% of UVA and UVB rays.
  • Heat Regulating Mini Piqué Golf Polo (£110): 57% polyamide / 43% cotton mini piqué with Emana temperature-regulating fibres and UPF 50, in a classic fit.
  • Ultra Dry Golf T-shirt (£70): 65% cotton / 35% polyester jersey with Ultra Dry wicking and a golf print, in a classic fit.
  • Ultra Dry Golf Hoodie (£135): double-face stretch fabric in 88% polyester / 12% elastane, slim fit.
  • Outerwear: a £145 plaid golf jacket, an insulated £200 Protective Golf Windbreaker and a £240 water-repellent stretch windbreaker.

The golf line is mostly technical stretch jersey; the famous cotton petit piqué polo lives in the main range.

Price Verdict

Three Putt is far cheaper: its tees and hoodies each cost about a third of Lacoste's £70 golf T-shirt and £135 golf hoodie. But Lacoste's pieces are technical golf kit with wicking and stretch, and its technical polos have no Three Putt equivalent. For off-course cotton, Three Putt wins on value. For on-course kit, you're paying Lacoste for performance Three Putt doesn't offer.

Fit and Sizing

Three Putt Golf

Three Putt keeps fits simple, with one cut per garment. Tees are relaxed and run S–2XL. Long-sleeve tees are an oversized drop-shoulder fit in S–XL, and sweatshirts a regular fit and hoodies an oversized drop-shoulder fit, both in S–2XL. There's no XS, nothing above 2XL and no women's-specific cut.

Lacoste Golf

Lacoste uses numbered sizes alongside letters. They start at 2 (XS), and a size 4 is a medium. Fits vary by product. The core polo is a regular, slightly fitted cut, the golf hoodie is slim, and the golf T-shirt and Heat Regulating polo are classic fits. There's a relaxed-fit piqué polo and a tight-fit golf T-shirt too.

The numbering takes some getting used to, so check Lacoste's size guide before ordering.

Fit Verdict

Lacoste wins on range: more fits, sizes that start at XS, and a women's golf line. Three Putt is simpler to buy, with letter sizing and four clear cuts, but everything except the tees stops at 2XL. If you want a tailored golf polo, choose Lacoste. If you want a roomy tee or hoodie, choose Three Putt.

Style and Versatility

Three Putt Golf

Three Putt is golf culture you wear off the course. The six designs put golf graphics on everyday cotton, so a tee works with jeans at the pub and a hoodie works on the range or the sofa. At a casual course, a driving range or a pitch and putt, they fit right in.

Graphic cotton tees aren't for formal clubs, though. Golfers at clubs with a collared-shirt dress code will want a polo rather than a tee. Our golf dress code guide covers the rules in more detail.

Lacoste Golf

Lacoste's strength is golf kit that looks smart anywhere. The crocodile is one of the most recognised logos in sportswear, and a navy Ultra Dry polo works in a clubhouse or a restaurant. Striped, printed and colour-block golf polos add colour without shouting. The flip side is that the visible crocodile won't suit golfers who want no logo at all.

Style Verdict

A split decision. Lacoste is the better on-course and smart-casual choice, with polos that satisfy dress codes and still look good at dinner. Three Putt is the better casual off-course choice, with graphic tees and heavyweight hoodies that look like streetwear rather than golf kit.

Quality, Durability and Sustainability

Three Putt Golf

Three Putt's quality case is fabric weight and composition, stated plainly: 305gsm 100% cotton tees and long-sleeves, 400gsm cotton sweatshirts and 430gsm cotton/polyester hoodies. A heavier fabric gives a tee or hoodie more body and structure than lightweight basics. On sustainability, Three Putt makes no recycled-content or eco claims; its tees are 100% cotton.

Lacoste Golf

Lacoste brings more than 90 years of garment-making and an organised sustainability programme. Many golf pieces carry its "Committed selection" label, and the Ultra Dry Stretch polo uses recycled polyester. Lacoste's commitments page says "90% of polyester used will be recycled by 2026". It also targets a 37% cut in greenhouse gas emissions per product sold by 2030, runs a second-hand platform and publishes a sustainable development report.

Lacoste says its products are designed in France and made in its French factories and abroad. Care is specific: most golf pieces are a 30°C wash with no tumble drying.

Quality Verdict

Lacoste is the more developed operation, with technical fabrics, traceability statements and published sustainability targets. Three Putt's case is simple: heavyweight cotton with its weights and blends published, and no green claims. If recycled content matters to you, Lacoste has the stronger record.

Customer Support and Returns

Three Putt Golf

Three Putt's support is by email at support@threeputtgolfclothing.co.uk. UK delivery is free. Returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery: email support first, then post the item back at your own cost.

Lacoste Golf

Lacoste runs a bigger operation. You can use an email contact form or call a team based in Bordeaux, Monday to Saturday, 9am–6pm, and there's a detailed FAQ. Standard DPD delivery takes 2–4 working days for £4.95, free over £89. Express is £7.95, delivery to a Lacoste store is free, and no duties apply.

Returns are free within 30 days through a DPD portal, or at eight UK Lacoste boutiques including Regent Street and the Trafford Centre. Items must be unworn with tags attached, personalised pieces can't be returned, and the original delivery charge isn't refunded.

If you'd rather buy from a golf retailer, Function18 stocks Lacoste golf.

Support Verdict

Lacoste wins. Free 30-day returns, phone support, store returns and free delivery over £89 beat Three Putt's 14-day returns at your own cost and email-only support. Three Putt's answer is free UK delivery on every order and one direct inbox.

Our Pick

Buy Lacoste Golf if you need clothes for the course itself. Its Ultra Dry polos, trousers, shorts and windbreakers handle heat, sun and wind, meet collared-shirt dress codes and look smart afterwards. You'll pay £100 for the Ultra Dry Stretch polo, but you get performance, a wide size range and a women's line. Our full Lacoste Golf review covers the range in more depth.

Buy Three Putt if you want golf style for everything around the round. The graphic golf tees start at £24.99 and the 430gsm hoodies top out at £54.99. The 400gsm sweatshirts and long-sleeve tees fill the gap, and delivery is free across the UK.

Plenty of golfers will own both: a Lacoste polo for the monthly medal and a Three Putt hoodie for the range. If Lacoste's prices put you off, see our list of Lacoste Golf alternatives, or browse more European golf brands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Three Putt vs Lacoste Golf

Is Three Putt a good alternative to Lacoste Golf?

For off-course wear, yes. Three Putt's graphic tees and heavyweight hoodies cost £24.99–£54.99, against £70 for Lacoste's Ultra Dry Golf T-shirt and £135 for its golf hoodie, and UK delivery is free. For on-course wear, not directly. Three Putt doesn't sell trousers or outerwear and makes no performance claims, so it can't replace Lacoste's technical kit.

Which is better on the course?

Lacoste, clearly. Its golf polos use stretch jersey with Ultra Dry moisture-wicking and UPF 50 protection, and the range adds golf trousers, shorts, windbreakers and caps. Three Putt's cotton tees and hoodies are casual streetwear with no technical performance features. They suit a range session or a relaxed round, and golfers at collared-shirt clubs will want a polo rather than a tee.

Is Three Putt good quality?

Three Putt publishes exactly what you're buying. Tees are 100% cotton at 305gsm, long-sleeves 305gsm, sweatshirts 400gsm cotton, and hoodies 430gsm in a 56% cotton / 44% polyester blend. Those are substantial weights for casual wear. It doesn't claim technical performance, so judge it as streetwear rather than golf kit.

How do the fits differ?

Three Putt uses letter sizes and set cuts: relaxed tees, regular sweatshirts and oversized drop-shoulder hoodies, all in S–2XL, and oversized drop-shoulder long-sleeves in S–XL. Lacoste uses numbered sizes starting at 2 (XS), with slim, regular, classic and relaxed fits by product, so check its size guide before ordering.

Are Lacoste and Three Putt sustainable?

Lacoste has the more developed programme. Many golf pieces carry its "Committed selection" label, its Ultra Dry polo uses recycled polyester, and it targets 90% recycled polyester by 2026 and lower emissions per product by 2030. Three Putt makes no recycled-content or eco claims; its tees are 100% cotton.

Which is better value?

For casual clothing, Three Putt: a 430gsm hoodie costs £45.99–£54.99 against £135 for Lacoste's golf hoodie, and delivery is always free. For on-course kit, Lacoste is fair value for its tier: you're paying for wicking and sun protection that Three Putt doesn't offer.

Which ships better to the UK?

Three Putt delivers free on every UK order. Lacoste charges in pounds with no duties, and standard DPD delivery is £4.95, free over £89, or £7.95 for express. Collection from a Lacoste store is free. On returns, Lacoste is better: free within 30 days, against Three Putt's 14 days with return postage paid by you.
