Exploring the brands golfers turn to beyond ProQuip's Scottish approach to all-weather golf clothing.

How We Review Golf Clothing Brands

Every review on the Three Putt journal is written by Graeme Whiles, the founder of Three Putt Golf Clothing. As a competing brand, we have an obvious conflict of interest. We take this seriously and address it directly in our review methodology, which explains how we assess brands consistently regardless of whether they compete with us.

Top Picks

  1. Sunderland of Scotland: Best overall alternative, with a lifetime fabric guarantee and a published rating
  2. Ping Apparel: Best for rated waterproofs you can try on in UK golf shops
  3. Abacus Golf: Best for three published waterproof tiers
  4. Chervò: Best for Italian-styled technical golfwear
  5. Stromberg Golf: Best for waterproofs at high street prices
  6. Three Putt Golf: Best for golf streetwear off the course
  7. Lululemon Golf: Best for technical golfwear with UK stores

Why People Look Beyond ProQuip Golf

UK golfers look beyond ProQuip for a few practical reasons. It publishes no millimetre waterproof rating, and its lifetime guarantee covers the stormFORCE PX series, with three years elsewhere. Returns go back at your own cost. American Golf, Scottsdale Golf and Function18 didn't list it in October 2026, and its polos and trousers are basic.

ProQuip was founded in North Berwick in 1981 and still calls itself Scottish, though its head office is in Carlisle. It first outfitted Jack Nicklaus's American Ryder Cup team in 1983. Since then it says it has supplied weatherwear to 20 Ryder Cup teams, six American and 14 European, more than any other manufacturer.

The rainwear is the reason to buy it. ProQuip says it doesn't adapt hiking or ski clothing for golf, aiming for garments that are "lighter, quieter, softer and more comfortable". Seams are Hot-Melt sealed. Every waterproof carries a three-year waterproof guarantee, and stormFORCE PX jackets and trousers are guaranteed for life. The 2026 stormFORCE PX9 jacket is £180, and the brand was rated 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 326 reviews in October 2026.

The gaps are about information and convenience. In October 2026, ProQuip's product and technology pages described its fabrics as exclusive, light and breathable, but gave no millimetre or breathability figures. Sunderland, Ping, Abacus, Chervò and Stromberg all publish at least one rating. Returns run to 30 days, but the postage is yours and an exchange means ordering again. ProQuip doesn't ship to the EU or the US either.

Here are seven alternatives, ranked with UK golfers in mind, with what each one does better and where each one falls short.

Detailed Breakdown by Brand

Sunderland of Scotland: Best overall alternative, with a lifetime fabric guarantee and a published rating

Available on: glenmuir.com/sunderland

Key Features:

  • The Sunderland family began tailoring in Glasgow in 1911, and Toby and Ida Sunderland founded the sportswear business in 1966
  • Owned by Glenmuir of Lanark since 2020, after a deal announced in October 2019, and sold through Glenmuir's webshop
  • Whisperdry, launched in 1998, is a quiet, stretchy waterproof in 100% recycled polyester with a PFC-free finish
  • Its history page lists Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Sandy Lyle among past wearers

Pros:

  • Publishes its figures: the core waterproofs are rated 8,000mm and 5,000g/m², where ProQuip gives no number
  • A lifetime waterproof guarantee for the fabric, stated on its product pages
  • The Whisperdry Stealth jacket was £180 RRP in October 2026, the same as the PX9, with Quebec trousers at £95
  • Free UK delivery and free UK returns within 28 days, where ProQuip charges return postage

Cons:

  • Outerwear and warm layers only, with polos and shirts left to sister brand Glenmuir
  • 8,000mm is modest next to the 20,000mm-plus jackets from Ping, Abacus, Chervò and Stromberg
  • No exchanges, so a wrong size means a refund and a new order

Verdict:

Sunderland is the closest like-for-like: Scottish, rain-first and priced the same as ProQuip's flagship. It tells you what the fabric does and takes UK returns back for free. The catch is range, because it replaces ProQuip's rainwear and layers but not its polos.

Ping Apparel: Best for rated waterproofs you can try on in UK golf shops

Available on: pingeurope.com

Key Features:

  • PING is family-owned, founded in 1959 by Karsten and Louise Solheim, and its UK clothing is run by PING Europe in Gainsborough
  • The AquaDrive Pro jacket claims 30,000mm waterproofing and 40,000g/m² breathability, and was tested at PING's research centre at Loughborough University
  • Full men's, women's (sizes 6–20) and junior ranges, from polos and knitwear to trousers and waterproofs
  • Sells Team Europe's 2026 Solheim Cup kit

Pros:

  • The standard AquaDrive jacket was £150 in October 2026, £30 less than the PX9, with the AquaDrive Pro at £300
  • American Golf, Function18, Clubhouse Golf and GolfOnline all stock it, so you can try before you buy
  • Sold in pounds, with £5 UK delivery or free over £50, the same terms as ProQuip
  • A deeper playing wardrobe than ProQuip, with polos at £45–£65

Cons:

  • Only 14 days to return a direct order, posted back at your own cost
  • A five-year limited warranty on AquaDrive Pro and SensorDry 2.5 pieces, not a lifetime promise
  • Safe club styling, and nothing beyond 3XL

Verdict:

Ping suits golfers who want a number on the label and a shop to try it in. The standard AquaDrive undercuts the PX9, and the AquaDrive Pro claims 30,000mm for £300. ProQuip's 30-day window and lifetime PX cover are the two things Ping doesn't match.

Abacus Golf: Best for three published waterproof tiers

Available on: clubhousegolf.co.uk · golfonline.co.uk

Key Features:

  • A family-owned Swedish brand founded in 1991 by Sven-Olof Karlsson and Ingrid Lindgren Wachtmeister
  • Three rated rain tiers: Links at 10,000mm, Bounce at 15,000mm with four-way stretch, and Pitch 37.5 at 20,000mm
  • Men's, women's and junior ranges, though UK shops mainly carry the rainwear
  • A National Tournament Partner of the PGA in Great Britain and Ireland since 2025, and an official licensee of the 2026 Solheim Cup and 2027 Ryder Cup

Pros:

  • You can buy exactly the protection you need, which ProQuip's unpublished ratings don't allow
  • The Pitch 37.5 was joint Best Overall in MyGolfSpy's rain gear tests in both 2025 and 2026
  • A clear price ladder in October 2026, from a £129 Links jacket to the £219.99 Bounce and £269.99 Pitch
  • PFC-free rain fabrics

Cons:

  • No stated long-term waterproof guarantee, just a repair-or-replace complaints process
  • The brand's own store delivers only to Sweden and Denmark, so UK buyers go through stockists
  • The Pitch costs about £90 more than ProQuip's PX9

Verdict:

Abacus does the one thing ProQuip doesn't: it tells you plainly whether you're buying 10,000, 15,000 or 20,000mm of protection. The trade is the guarantee, because ProQuip backs every waterproof for at least three years and Abacus states no fixed term. Buy it through Clubhouse Golf or GolfOnline.

Chervò: Best for Italian-styled technical golfwear

Available on: chervo.com

Key Features:

  • An Italian brand founded in 1982 by brothers Manfred and Peter Erlacher, which began as a Dolomites ski label and moved into golf in the early 1990s with rainwear
  • Its own fabric suite, including Aqua-Block waterproofing, Wind-Lock windproofing and Pro-Therm insulation
  • Men's, women's and junior lines, with a UK web store priced in pounds
  • An official Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup licensee, with a 2027 Ryder Cup capsule launched in August 2026

Pros:

  • The Masterpiece Aqua-Block jacket is rated over 20,000mm with taped seams, a kind of figure ProQuip doesn't publish
  • A full playing wardrobe on one UK store, from polos and knitwear to trousers and rainwear
  • Deep knitwear and women's ranges, with women's waterproof trousers in UK 6–20
  • Team Chervò's Jenny Shin won the 2026 Women's Scottish Open

Cons:

  • UK orders ship with duties unpaid, so the courier can bill you for customs charges
  • Returns carry a €65 fee, and an exchange means returning and reordering
  • Expensive, with jackets at about £281–£341 and men's polos at about £119–£149 in October 2026, and no 3XL

Verdict:

Chervò brings more than four decades of mountain fabric work to golf and puts a number on its best jacket. But the Masterpiece costs about £100 more than the PX9, duties can land on your doorstep, and a wrong size costs €65 to send back. Order a size you already know.

Stromberg Golf: Best for waterproofs at high street prices

Available on: americangolf.co.uk

Key Features:

  • Started as a family business in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, and owned by American Golf since September 2019
  • Sold through American Golf's website and stores, with just a few small independents carrying odd lines
  • The Bandit jacket is rated 20,000mm and 10,000g with fully taped seams; the cheaper Weather Tech jacket is rated 5,000mm
  • Men's sizes up to 5XL on many lines, women's 8–20 and juniors 7–14 years

Pros:

  • The Weather Tech jacket was £79.99 and the Bandit £99.99 in October 2026, well under the PX9's £180
  • Polos from £29.99 and Hampton trousers at £49.99, so a polo, trousers and Weather Tech jacket together cost less than one PX9
  • Try on, collect and return for free at around 80 American Golf stores
  • Today's Golfer named the Weather Tech its best value all-weather trouser in March 2026

Cons:

  • Postal returns are at your own cost, and store purchases have only 14 days
  • Essentially one retailer, so there's little shopping around on price
  • No third-party certifications listed, and no country of manufacture stated

Verdict:

Stromberg is the value answer, with a 20,000mm Bandit jacket at £99.99 and around 80 stores to try it in. It also publishes more about its fabrics than ProQuip does. The Bandit's 10,000g breathability is modest, so it suits cold, wet winters more than muggy summer showers.

Three Putt Golf: Best for golf streetwear off the course

Available on: threeputtgolfclothing.co.uk

Key Features:

  • A UK golf streetwear brand based in Leeds, selling four garments in six graphic designs: Contours, Happy Place, Tee Time, Reckless Driving, The Scenic Route and Three on the Green
  • Tees in 100% cotton at 305gsm, relaxed fit, S–2XL, £24.99–£30.99, in five colourways per design
  • Hoodies at 430gsm (56% cotton, 44% polyester), oversized drop-shoulder fit, S–2XL, £45.99–£54.99, in four colourways per design
  • Sweatshirts in 400gsm cotton at £37.99–£47.99, and long-sleeve tees at 305gsm, £28.99–£35.99

Pros:

  • Priced in pounds, with free UK delivery on every order, where ProQuip charges £5 under £50
  • A hoodie, a sweatshirt and a tee together cost less than one PX9 jacket
  • Heavyweight hoodies and sweatshirts for the clubhouse and the drive home

Cons:

  • No polos, trousers or outerwear, so clubs with a collared-shirt dress code mean buying a polo elsewhere
  • Cotton streetwear, not technical kit: no wicking, stretch or weather claims
  • Returns within 14 days of delivery, emailing support first, with return postage at the customer's cost

Verdict:

ProQuip is a weather brand, and Three Putt makes no weather gear, so this is the least like-for-like pick on the list. It covers what you change into after the round. Wear a ProQuip shell on the course and a Three Putt hoodie in the bar.

Lululemon Golf: Best for technical golfwear with UK stores

Available on: lululemon.co.uk · Read our full Lululemon Golf review

Key Features:

  • Its dedicated "Designed for Golf" line launched in spring 2022
  • Named fabrics, including Warpstreme four-way stretch in the ABC trousers and sweat-concealing ShowZero in the polos
  • Men's and women's golf ranges, including a taped Waterproof Golf Jacket
  • PGA Tour players Min Woo Lee (from January 2024) and Max Homa (from January 2025) wear it

Pros:

  • More than 20 UK stores, free delivery over £50 and free returns within 30 days
  • Free trouser hemming in store
  • A complete playing wardrobe, with polos at £78–£88 and golf trousers at £138 in October 2026

Cons:

  • The Waterproof Golf Jacket started at £228 in October 2026, more than the PX9
  • Golf accessories are thin: no golf shoes, gloves or headcovers, and headwear can't be returned
  • Dropped its single-use plastic target in its impact report, released in late 2025

Verdict:

Lululemon is the low-friction option, with a UK shop to try things on and free returns if the size is wrong. It's a crossover brand rather than a rainwear specialist, and its jacket costs more than the PX9. Buy it for the polos and trousers, and keep a specialist shell for winter.

Quick Comparison Grid

Brand Best For Price Range Sustainability
ProQuip Golf Scottish all-weather golf clothing with long waterproof guarantees ££ Low (recycled polyester and fluorocarbon-free finishes on ProPac-Lite; no certifications)
Sunderland of Scotland A lifetime fabric guarantee with a published rating ££ Moderate (100% recycled polyester Whisperdry with a PFC-free finish; no certifications found)
Ping Apparel Rated waterproofs you can try on in UK golf shops ££–£££ Low (recycled polyester on some pieces, item by item rather than a programme)
Abacus Golf Three published waterproof tiers £££ Low (PFC-free rain fabrics; no certifications named)
Chervò Italian-styled technical golfwear ££££ Low (a few pieces carry a recycled tag; no wider programme)
Stromberg Golf Waterproofs at high street prices £ Low (recycled polyester on some polos; no certifications named)
Three Putt Golf Golf streetwear off the course ££ No recycled-content or eco claims; tees are 100% cotton
Lululemon Golf Technical golfwear with UK stores £££ Moderate (published targets, with the single-use plastic goal dropped in late 2025)

Summary

ProQuip has made golf weatherwear since 1981, has supplied 20 Ryder Cup teams and guarantees its stormFORCE PX jackets and trousers for life. At £180, the PX9 is fair value for a lifetime-backed shell, and every other ProQuip waterproof carries three years.

Its weak spots are information and convenience. It publishes no millimetre ratings, charges return postage and isn't on the shelves of the big UK golf chains. Its polos and trousers are also basic next to the rainwear.

The alternatives sort themselves by what you value. Sunderland matches the PX9's price with a lifetime fabric guarantee, a published rating and free UK returns. Ping and Abacus give you numbers to compare, Chervò adds Italian style at a premium, and Stromberg costs about half. Lululemon covers the rest of the playing wardrobe, and Three Putt covers what you wear afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions About ProQuip Golf

What is ProQuip Golf known for?

ProQuip is known for golf weatherwear. It was founded in North Berwick in 1981 and says it has supplied weatherwear to 20 Ryder Cup teams since first outfitting Jack Nicklaus's American side in 1983, six American and 14 European. It says it develops fabrics for the golf swing rather than adapting hiking or ski clothing, and its flagship is the stormFORCE PX series.

Who owns ProQuip Golf?

ProQuip Ltd is a British company with its head office in Carlisle. The Edinburgh Woollen Mill group bought ProQuip in 2009, and its UK companies are still registered at EWM's mill in Langholm. Since April 2023, Companies House has listed the UK group's controlling shareholder as Proquip Holdings Limited, registered in the UAE.

How waterproof is ProQuip clothing?

ProQuip didn't publish a millimetre waterproof or breathability rating on its product or technology pages in October 2026. It describes Hot-Melt seam sealing and precision lamination instead, and backs the result with guarantees: three years on every waterproof, and life on stormFORCE PX jackets and trousers. Testers rate it well, and Today's Golfer gave the stormFORCE PX8 jacket 4.5 out of 5.

Is ProQuip Golf expensive?

It sits in the middle of the market for a rain specialist. In October 2026 the stormFORCE PX9 jacket was £180 at full price, the ProPac-Lite £120, the women's hooded Paige £130 and the junior Aqualite Pro £95. The Tempest jacket is the entry point at £90. Away from rainwear, the Hawk zip-neck mid-layer is £70 and Pro-Tech polos are £30–£39.

Does ProQuip ship to the UK, and what are its returns terms?

Yes. ProQuip is a UK company selling in pounds. UK delivery is £5 on orders up to £50 and free above that, in one to three working days. It doesn't ship to the EU or the US. Returns are accepted within 30 days if items are unworn, unwashed and labelled, but return postage is the customer's cost, and an exchange means ordering again.

How does ProQuip clothing fit?

Rainwear is cut to go over golf clothes, so buy your usual size. Men's sizes run S–3XL (36–52 inch chest), with Aqualite styles to 4XL, and women's run XS–XXL, mapped to UK 8–20. The PX9 has side adjustor tabs for a closer fit. ProQuip says its Pro-Tech Links trousers and Dunes shorts run small at the waist, so size up.

Where can I buy ProQuip in the UK?

The full range is on proquipgolf.net. GolfOnline listed around 64 ProQuip products in October 2026, and Clubhouse Golf carried some older lines. American Golf, Scottsdale Golf and Function18 didn't list the brand, so use ProQuip's store locator to find a pro shop near you before you buy.

How does ProQuip compare with Galvin Green?

Both back their waterproofing for the long haul. Galvin Green guarantees the waterproof fabric of its GORE-TEX and Pertex jackets with no time limit, and ProQuip's lifetime cover applies to its stormFORCE PX jackets and trousers. The big difference is price: the PX9 is £180, against £359 for Galvin Green's Arlo.
