7 Best Sun Mountain Alternatives in 2026 | Ranked

Exploring the brands golfers turn to when Sun Mountain's best rain jackets aren't sold in Britain.

How We Review Golf Clothing Brands

Every review on the Three Putt journal is written by Graeme Whiles, the founder of Three Putt Golf Clothing. As a competing brand, we have an obvious conflict of interest. We take this seriously and address it directly in our review methodology, which explains how we assess brands consistently regardless of whether they compete with us.

Top Picks

  1. ProQuip Golf: Best overall alternative from a Scottish all-weather specialist
  2. Sunderland of Scotland: Best for a lifetime fabric guarantee
  3. Abacus Sportswear: Best for the rainwear that outscored it in testing
  4. Ping Apparel: Best for rated waterproofs you can try on in UK shops
  5. Three Putt Golf: Best for golf streetwear off the course
  6. Stromberg Golf: Best for a 20,000mm jacket under £100
  7. Cross Sportswear: Best for Swedish rain gear delivered with duties paid

Why People Look Beyond Sun Mountain

UK golfers look beyond Sun Mountain because so little of its clothing reaches Britain. Its own store ships only to the US and Canada. The independent UK site sells four garments in US sizes, and none of the better Stratus or Cirque II waterproofs. The big UK golf chains stock its bags and trolleys, not its clothing.

Sun Mountain is a golf bag and trolley maker, founded in 1981 by Rick Reimers and based in Missoula, Montana, since 1984. It added golf outerwear in 1990. Private equity firm Solace Capital Partners has owned the company since March 2022.

The rainwear deserves its reputation. The range climbs from the packable Monsoon, fully seam-sealed with a 15K-rated membrane, through the 2.5-layer Stratus to the three-layer Cirque II, rated 20K waterproof and 30K breathable. Breaking Eighty scored the Cirque line 9.2/10, one step below top-end Galvin Green. In MyGolfSpy's 2026 rain gear test, the Cirque II and the Monsoon both scored 9.2.

The problem is access. In October 2026 the UK retailer at sunmountaingolf.co.uk listed the Monsoon jacket at £79.99, the trousers at £59.99, a short-sleeve pullover at £77.99 and the Silvertip polo at £34.99. That is its entire clothing range. Everything is cut in US sizes, so a UK large usually fits a US medium, and there is no women's clothing on the UK site.

The small print adds up too. Sun Mountain gives its rainwear a two-year waterproof guarantee, but the UK retailer quotes a 12-month manufacturer's warranty. UK returns are allowed within 30 days, with the postage at your cost. And the brand publishes no sustainability, recycled-content or country-of-origin information for its clothing.

Here are seven alternatives, ranked with UK buyers in mind, covering who each one suits and where each one falls down.

Best Pick For…

Play Style / Need Best Brand
A Scottish all-weather specialist that sells its whole range direct in pounds ProQuip Golf
A waterproof whose fabric is guaranteed for life Sunderland of Scotland
The rain jacket that beat Sun Mountain's in the same test Abacus Sportswear
A higher-rated waterproof you can try on in a UK shop Ping Apparel
Golf streetwear for the clubhouse and the drive home Three Putt Golf
A 20,000mm jacket for under £100 on the high street Stromberg Golf
Swedish 20,000mm rain gear delivered with duties paid Cross Sportswear

Detailed Breakdown by Brand

ProQuip Golf: Best overall alternative from a Scottish all-weather specialist

Available on: proquipgolf.net

Key Features:

  • Founded in North Berwick in 1981, the same year as Sun Mountain, with its head office now in Carlisle
  • Says it has supplied weatherwear to 20 Ryder Cup teams since 1983, more than any other clothing maker
  • Hot-melt sealed seams, a four-way stretch fabric on the stormFORCE PX series and "Swing Silent Tech" to cut rustle
  • Rain jackets, trousers, windproofs and mid-layers, plus women's (XS–XXL) and juniors' ranges

Pros:

  • Sells its whole range direct in pounds, with £5 UK delivery or free over £50, where Sun Mountain's own store won't ship here
  • A lifetime waterproof guarantee on stormFORCE PX jackets and trousers, and three years on every other waterproof
  • Women's and junior ranges, which Sun Mountain's UK site doesn't offer
  • Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 326 reviews in October 2026

Cons:

  • The stormFORCE PX9 jacket was £180 at full price in October 2026, more than twice the UK Monsoon
  • Returns go back at your own cost, and an exchange means buying again
  • A rain-first range, so the polos, golf trousers and knitwear are basic

Verdict:

ProQuip is what Sun Mountain's clothing could be in Britain: a weather specialist of the same 1981 vintage, with the whole range on sale here. The PX9 costs more than a Monsoon, but it carries a lifetime waterproof guarantee from a company you can deal with direct.

Sunderland of Scotland: Best for a lifetime fabric guarantee

Available on: glenmuir.com/sunderland

Key Features:

  • The Sunderland family began tailoring in Glasgow in 1911, and Toby and Ida Sunderland founded the sportswear business in 1966
  • Owned by Glenmuir of Lanark since 2020, and sold through Glenmuir's webshop
  • Whisperdry, launched in 1998, is a quiet, stretchy waterproof in 100% recycled polyester
  • Its history page lists Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Sandy Lyle among past wearers

Pros:

  • A lifetime waterproof guarantee for the fabric, against Sun Mountain's two years on rainwear
  • The Whisperdry Stealth jacket was £180 RRP in October 2026, and Quebec trousers £95
  • Free UK delivery and free UK returns within 28 days
  • Function18, GolfOnline and Clubhouse Golf all stock it

Cons:

  • Rated 8,000mm waterproof and 5,000g/m² breathable, below even the Monsoon's 15K membrane
  • No exchanges, so a wrong size means a refund and a new order
  • Outerwear and warm layers only, with polos and shirts left to sister brand Glenmuir

Verdict:

Sunderland is the guarantee purchase: the waterproof fabric is covered for life, and delivery and returns are free. The published ratings are modest next to Sun Mountain's, so you are buying the promise and the availability rather than the numbers.

Abacus Sportswear: Best for the rainwear that outscored it in testing

Available on: abacussportswear.com

Key Features:

  • A family-owned Swedish brand, founded in 1991 by Sven-Olof Karlsson and Ingrid Lindgren Wachtmeister
  • Three rated rain tiers: Links at 10,000mm, Bounce at 15,000mm with four-way stretch, and Pitch 37.5 at 20,000mm with 50,000g breathability
  • A National Tournament Partner of the PGA in Great Britain and Ireland since 2025
  • An official licensee of the 2026 Solheim Cup and the 2027 Ryder Cup

Pros:

  • The Pitch 37.5 was joint Best Overall in MyGolfSpy's 2026 rain gear test at 9.8, against 9.2 for both the Cirque II and the Monsoon
  • Sold in UK shops through Clubhouse Golf and GolfOnline, where Sun Mountain's top jackets aren't sold at all
  • A clear ladder, from the £129 Links jacket to the £219.99 Bounce, so you pay only for the protection you need
  • PFC-free rain fabrics

Cons:

  • The Pitch was £269.99 RRP in October 2026, more than three times the UK Monsoon
  • The brand's own store delivers only to Sweden and Denmark, so UK buyers go through a retailer
  • No stated long-term waterproof guarantee, just a standard repair-or-replace complaints process

Verdict:

Abacus is the head-to-head winner: its Pitch beat both Sun Mountain jackets in the same 2026 test, and you can buy it from British shops. You pay heavily for that result, and there is no long-term waterproof guarantee to set against Sun Mountain's two years.

Ping Apparel: Best for rated waterproofs you can try on in UK shops

Available on: pingeurope.com

Key Features:

  • PING is family-owned, founded in 1959 by Karsten and Louise Solheim, and its UK clothing is run by PING Europe in Gainsborough
  • The AquaDrive Pro jacket claims 30,000mm waterproofing and 40,000g/m² breathability, and was designed and tested at PING's research centre at Loughborough University
  • Full men's, women's (sizes 6–20) and junior ranges, from polos and knitwear to trousers and waterproofs
  • Sells Team Europe's 2026 Solheim Cup kit

Pros:

  • The AquaDrive Pro's claimed rating beats the Cirque II's on paper, at £300 in October 2026
  • Cheaper shells too: the standard AquaDrive jacket is £150 and the Impervious £185
  • Easy to try on, with American Golf, Function18, Clubhouse Golf and GolfOnline all stocking it
  • A five-year limited warranty on AquaDrive Pro and SensorDry 2.5 waterproofs, longer than Sun Mountain's two years

Cons:

  • Only 14 days to return a direct order, posted back at your own cost
  • Delivery from pingeurope.com costs £5 unless you spend over £50
  • Safe club styling, and nothing beyond 3XL

Verdict:

Ping is what Sun Mountain's clothing would look like with proper UK distribution: an equipment maker whose waterproofs hang in the shops you already use. It is the safe, available answer, with a higher claimed rating at the top of the range and a longer warranty behind it.

Three Putt Golf: Best for golf streetwear off the course

Available on: threeputtgolfclothing.co.uk

Key Features:

  • A UK golf streetwear brand based in Leeds, selling four garments in six graphic designs: Contours, Happy Place, Tee Time, Reckless Driving, The Scenic Route and Three on the Green
  • Tees in 100% cotton at 305gsm, relaxed fit, S–2XL, £24.99–£30.99, in five colourways per design
  • Hoodies at 430gsm (56% cotton, 44% polyester), oversized drop-shoulder fit, S–2XL, £45.99–£54.99, in four colourways per design
  • Sweatshirts at 400gsm, £37.99–£47.99, and long-sleeve tees at 305gsm, £28.99–£35.99

Pros:

  • Priced in pounds, with free UK delivery
  • A hoodie and a tee together can cost less than one UK Monsoon jacket
  • Heavyweight 400gsm sweatshirts and 430gsm hoodies for the clubhouse and the drive home

Cons:

  • No polos, trousers or outerwear, so clubs with a collared-shirt dress code mean buying a polo elsewhere
  • Cotton streetwear, not technical kit: no wicking, stretch or weather claims
  • Returns within 14 days of delivery, emailing support first, with return postage at the customer's cost

Verdict:

Three Putt doesn't do Sun Mountain's job, and it doesn't try to. It covers what you wear on a dry day and change into after a wet one, priced in pounds with free UK delivery. Keep a proper waterproof from elsewhere on this list in the bag.

Stromberg Golf: Best for a 20,000mm jacket under £100

Available on: americangolf.co.uk

Key Features:

  • A British golf clothing brand that American Golf dates back to 1977, owned by American Golf since September 2019
  • Sold exclusively through American Golf's website and around 80 stores
  • The Bandit waterproof jacket is rated 20,000mm waterproof and 10,000g breathable, with fully taped seams, at £99.99
  • DP World Tour winner Andy Sullivan signed a two-year deal with the brand in January 2026

Pros:

  • Matches the Cirque II's 20K waterproof rating for £99.99, in shops you can walk into
  • A Bandit jacket and the £69.99 Bandit trousers make a full rain suit for under £170
  • Wide sizing: many men's lines run S–5XL, with ladies' sizes 8–20 and a junior range
  • £2.99 delivery, free over £50, and free click and collect

Cons:

  • The Bandit's 10,000g breathability is a third of the Cirque II's 30K rating, which shows on warm, wet rounds
  • One retailer only, so range, stock and prices all depend on American Golf
  • Postal returns of online orders are at your own cost unless the item is faulty

Verdict:

Stromberg puts Sun Mountain's headline waterproof number on a British high street for Monsoon money. The lower breathability is the trade, and it matters most when you're walking hard on a mild, wet day.

Cross Sportswear: Best for Swedish rain gear delivered with duties paid

Available on: dormy.com

Key Features:

  • Founded in Gothenburg in 1986 by two golfers, and built around its own FTX rain technology
  • The X-Pro and Pro jackets are rated 20,000mm waterproof with four-way stretch, and the Hurricane 15,000mm
  • Topped MyGolfSpy's rain gear test three years running, from 2017 to 2019, sharing the 2019 title
  • The trademark was sold in October 2025 to Swedish company Atelier CRSW AB, weeks before the old operating company went bankrupt

Pros:

  • Dormy's UK store sells the current range in pounds, with VAT and customs included in the price
  • The X-Pro jacket was £179 and the X-Pro trousers £149 at Dormy in October 2026
  • Free UK delivery over £50, and Dormy's returns page says UK returns within 14 days are free
  • Women's rain gear in XS–XXL on the Pro and Hurricane lines

Cons:

  • The 2025 bankruptcy and change of owner leave long-term stock and support uncertain
  • The three-year rain gear warranty covers only purchases from cross-sportswear.com, which doesn't deliver to the UK
  • Its test pedigree is dated: the last MyGolfSpy win came in 2019

Verdict:

Cross is the specialist's alternative: Swedish 20,000mm rain gear with a real test record, delivered from Dormy with duties paid. The new ownership and the direct-only warranty are genuine worries, so treat it as a good jacket with little aftercare behind it.

Quick Comparison Grid

Brand Best For Price Range Sustainability
Sun Mountain Good-value seam-sealed rainwear, if the piece you want is sold here £–££ Low (no sustainability, recycled-content or country-of-origin information on its apparel pages)

Sunderland of Scotland A lifetime fabric guarantee ££ Moderate (100% recycled polyester Whisperdry with a PFC-free finish; no certifications found)
Abacus Sportswear The rainwear that outscored it in testing £££ Low (PFC-free rain fabrics; no certifications named)
Ping Apparel Rated waterproofs you can try on in UK shops ££–£££ Low (recycled polyester on some pieces, item by item rather than a programme)
Three Putt Golf Golf streetwear off the course ££ No recycled-content or eco claims; tees are 100% cotton
Stromberg Golf A 20,000mm jacket under £100 £–££ Low (recycled polyester in some polos; no certifications named)
Cross Sportswear Swedish rain gear delivered with duties paid ££–£££ Low (mostly recycled or recyclable polyester, but virgin polyester in its best rain gear; made in China; no certifications)

Summary

Sun Mountain makes honest, good-value rainwear. The Monsoon is a fully seam-sealed 15K jacket for £79.99 in the UK, and reviewers put the Cirque line close to Galvin Green for far less money.

For a British golfer the problem is access. Its own store won't ship here, the UK site sells four garments in US sizes, and the Stratus and Cirque II stay in America. The guarantee is worded differently on each side of the Atlantic, and nothing is published about where the clothes are made.

ProQuip and Sunderland back their waterproofs for life and sell them from British companies. Abacus beat both Sun Mountain jackets in MyGolfSpy's 2026 test. Ping, Stromberg and Cross put 20,000mm-plus jackets within easy reach of UK buyers, and Three Putt covers what you wear off the course.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sun Mountain

Who owns Sun Mountain?

Sun Mountain Sports was founded in 1981 by Rick Reimers and is based in Missoula, Montana. Private equity firm Solace Capital Partners bought the company from Reimers in March 2022, and long-time president Ed Kowachek became chief executive. The company kept its management team and its Missoula headquarters after the sale.

Can you buy Sun Mountain clothing in the UK?

Some of it. Sun Mountain's own store ships to the US and Canada only. The independent retailer at sunmountaingolf.co.uk sells the Monsoon jacket, trousers and short-sleeve pullover, plus the Silvertip polo, in pounds with free mainland delivery over £20. American Golf, Scottsdale Golf, Clubhouse Golf and GolfOnline stock its bags and trolleys rather than its clothing.

How waterproof is Sun Mountain rainwear?

It depends on the tier. The Monsoon uses a 15K-rated membrane and is fully seam-sealed. The Stratus is a 2.5-layer jacket, and the three-layer Cirque II is rated 20K waterproof and 30K breathable, at $329.99 (about £254) in the US in October 2026. Only the Monsoon is sold in the UK.

Is Sun Mountain rain gear any good?

Yes, especially for the money. Breaking Eighty scored the Cirque line 9.2/10, one step below top-end Galvin Green at under half the price, though it tested the original Cirque rather than the Cirque II. In MyGolfSpy's 2026 rain gear test, the Cirque II and Monsoon both scored 9.2, behind Abacus and KJUS at 9.8.

How does Sun Mountain sizing run?

In US sizes, which run larger than UK sizes. The UK retailer labels each size twice, so EU Large is USA Medium, and advises that a UK large will usually fit a US medium. The cut is relaxed rather than slim. UK waterproofs come in US medium to 2XL, with no small, and polos in US small to 3XL.

What guarantee and returns does Sun Mountain offer in the UK?

Sun Mountain gives rainwear a two-year waterproof guarantee and covers outerwear zips, hems and seams for one year. The UK retailer quotes a 12-month manufacturer's warranty, so keep your receipt and ask which applies. Through sunmountaingolf.co.uk you have 30 days to return unused goods for a refund or exchange, paying the return postage yourself.

Do any tour players wear Sun Mountain?

DP World Tour player Ryggs Johnston, from Libby, Montana, won the 2024 ISPS Handa Australian Open. He signed as a Sun Mountain ambassador in June 2026 to use its travel bags and apparel. PGA Tour winner Joel Dahmen fronted the brand's "Golf State of Mind" film series in 2026, but his partnership centres on bags.

How does Sun Mountain compare to Galvin Green?

Galvin Green is the premium benchmark, and it is far easier to buy in the UK. Its Arlo jacket is £359, and it guarantees the waterproof fabric of its GORE-TEX and Pertex jackets with no time limit. Sun Mountain's case is value: Breaking Eighty rated the Cirque just below Galvin Green at under half the price.
